How To Cook Perfect Roast Potatoes the Aunt Bessie's Way

Roast potatoes are a simple enough concept, yet are notoriously difficult to get right. Especially when you’re hosting a large gathering and have a hundred other things to manage, in which case making the perfect roast potatoes from scratch just isn’t doable. To get quality results every time and golden, crispy, fluffy roasties, simply follow the below.

How to cook our roast potatoes

1. Check your oven type

First thing’s first. Our roasties aren’t suitable for microwaves, so when it comes to cooking potatoes in the oven, it’s important to check what kind of appliance you have. This is because the recommended oven temperature for roast potatoes tends to vary. Fan-assisted ovens have interior fans which circulate the heat, cooking the food more quickly. This means that for a fan-assisted oven the cooking time is reduced by about 20°C.

2. Preheat the oven

With that in mind, pre-heat your oven to the right temperature for roast potatoes, depending on the appliance. If you have a conventional oven this means preheating it to 230°C, 450°F, Gas Mark 8. For a fan assisted oven, preheat to 210°C, 410°F. Ensuring your oven reaches the required temperature is key for the ultimate crispy roast potatoes, so don’t skip this step!

3. Remove potatoes from packaging

Remove all packaging from the product, and empty the potatoes into the hot fat. Watch out as they may sizzle!   Make sure to spread them out within a fairly equal distance from one another with the edges upturned, to ensure they cook evenly for perfect, crispy roast potatoes! At this point, you can season your roasties by placing opened garlic bulbs in with the potatoes and scattering rosemary leaves, or adding a little salt or pepper if desired.

4. Bake your potatoes

Pop the tray in the centre of the preheated oven and set a timer for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, turn the roast potatoes once on to the other side to make sure the skins crisp up evenly. Set the timer for another 15 minutes and cook until the roasties are beautifully crisp and golden all over.

5. Serve!

Carefully remove your perfectly cooked, delicious roast potatoes from the oven and make sure they’re piping hot before serving immediately. Voila! The ultimate roast potatoes in no more than thirty minutes.
